Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris (born October 20, 1964) was an American politician, attorney and vice president of United States. She is the first female vice-president and the highest ranking female politician in U.S history. She is a member of Congress and a former senator from California. Harris was born in Oakland and attended Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After establishing her career as an Alameda County District Attorney, Harris was hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Then she was appointed the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003, she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. She was elected Attorney General of California in 2010, and was re-elected in 2014. Harris was the United States junior senator from California, from 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Martinez in the 2016 Senate election, becoming the 2nd African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. In her time as a senator, she pushed for healthcare reform, federal descheduling of cannabis, a path for undocumented immigrants to become citizens as well as the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. She also backed progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile for her pointed examination of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual assault.
